Five Ashes

Tucked away in the depths of East Sussex, we worked closely with the owners of this property on a complete renovation of an old barn into an annex for guests. This comprised of a mezzanine bedroom with ensuite, open plan living area and kitchenette. The space was also to be used as a music room.

The original mill house was sadly flooded and therefore a full renovation of the house was carried out including a 9-inch brick flood wall built around the property. A new oak balcony and oak porch was added from our supplier Oak Frames Direct. We redesigned the ground floor and basement, changing external doors windows. Re-plumbed and re-wired throughout, lay new flooring, installed a new kitchen, bathroom and full decoration. The client chose a timeless parquet flooring supplied by E C Forest and installed by DM Flooring.

Framfield, East Sussex

A Sussex Farmhouse with a complex of outbuildings. This is an ongoing project for Chalvington Barns which started with converting the existing pool house. We re-built the pool house from the brick walls above and added a new timber frame and roof. Once the base was completed, we installed new double glazed sliding doors, new flooring internally, a new kitchen area and a separate changing room and cloakroom.

The next phase of this project involves converting a three bay garage into an Annex, laundry room and plant room. Upstairs will be a one-bedroom annex/studio apartment with a new kitchen and ensuite.

Downstairs, we are installing underfloor heating throughout, a laundry room, hall and cloakroom to access upstairs and a plant room for all the services to the house and outbuildings.

The main farmhouse we will convert to offer more suitable accommodation that is better suited to the family. This will include a new kitchen, breakfast room, study and entrance porch.  The existing roof will be replaced and tile hanging to the whole of the property including upgrading or replacing all windows.

Tiles supplied by Aldershaw.

Timber cladding with oak beams supplied by Copford Sawmill.

Double glazed sliding doors supplied by Project Glazing.

St Michael and All Angels church, Berwick

Nestled in the South Downs between Lewes and Polegate lies the peaceful village of Berwick. We are busy working to complete and safeguard the restoration project and provide facilities for visitors.  Works include a W.C. extension to the north of the tower and incorporating a kitchenette. All built in flint and stone using traditional methods in keeping with the look and feel for this beautiful church.

We are extending the porch with new stonework to create an airlock which will protect the paintings

Externally we have lowered the path around the tower to reduce damp ingress and provide access to the South porch. All throughout this project we have worked alongside archaeologists and the conservation team.

St Michael and All Angels Grade 1 listed church in Berwick, East Sussex is most well-known for its extensive 20th Century paintings by Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Quentin Bell, which were commissioned during the Second World War by Bishop Bell (see Bloomsbury in Berwick).
